San Jose

San Jose is a beautiful area of Jacksonville that stretches along the St. Johns River from Mandarin to just south of San Marco and all along the northern section of San Jose Blvd.  A jewel in the midst of San Jose is Epping Forest, the former home of industrialist Alfred I. DuPont. The 58-acre estate is now a private gated community, with million-dollar plus homes and condos, and the Epping Forest Yacht Club.  It was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and has been restored to its original grandeur for the current residents who enjoy tennis, a private marina, and the exquisite club house, which is one of the city's most popular and prestigious venues for weddings and upscale events.

San Jose began development in 1905 as a residential neighborhood known for its influence of Mediterranean architecture. The historic San Jose Country Club came along in 1925.  The clubhouse was designed by Harold F. Saxelbye, prominent Jacksonville architect, and built by O. P. Woodcock Company for the guests of the old San Jose Hotel, which was situated on a high bluff overlooking the St. Johns River, less than a half mile to the west of the club. The original 18-hole golf course was designed by noted golf course architect Donald Ross, and was completed in 1927. Later the hotel failed, but the golf course and clubhouse continue to this day having enjoyed massive, state-of-the-art renovations. The old hotel is now part of prestigious nearby Bolles School.  Other schools serving San Jose include San Jose Episcopal Day School, San Jose Elementary School and San Jose Catholic School.
